Before designing the museum I asked myself how I feel these days, and wrote my emotions down. The story is about women — specifically women in my country, protesting for their basic rights under the slogan “woman, life, freedom”, while the reality of life is “captivity, death, dictatorship”.

Six equal boxes host exhibitions and installations — Prison, Freedom, Death, Life, Identity and Dictatorship — with further boxes for art residency, education, a void and a plaza. The landscape follows the pattern of the Iranian garden. There is no main entrance: visitors are free to explore everywhere on the campus.

The six boxes

Prison: walls through which visitors see only legs and hear sound, with skylights as a small hope. Freedom: transparent boxes that present conditional freedom. Death: suspended, walkable boxes carrying the names of those killed. Life: cylindrical skylights, a roof of water and sky, and a dry tree among green walls. Identity: mirrors and Iranian patterns that reflect faces and shadows. Dictatorship: a rotating ramp with a single, directed path.
